Discover the Susquehanna National Heritage Area
There’s something about the Susquehanna River that invites you to slow down and take it all in. Maybe it’s the way the water winds through the countryside, or how history seems to linger in the small towns along its banks. We love that our bed and breakfast is located right along the Susquehanna — it’s a beautiful and ever-changing backdrop to everyday life. The Susquehanna National Heritage Area offers a chance to explore the region’s rich culture, scenic beauty, and deep connection to the river.
Covering parts of York and Lancaster counties, this designated National Heritage Area includes over 100 miles of trails, more than 10 scenic overlooks, and plenty of ways to experience the outdoors. Hike, bike, or paddle your way through the landscape, then take a break at a local brewery, winery, or gallery to round out your day.
A great place to begin is the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, just eight miles south of B.F. Hiestand House. This historic riverfront home, dating back to the 1880s, is the headquarters for the Susquehanna National Heritage Area. It’s open year-round and offers guided tours focused on local history, the ecology of the Susquehanna, and Susquehannock Indian life. It also serves as the departure point for River Discovery Boat Tours — one-hour guided rides aboard the historic Chief Uncas, a 113-year-old electric boat. As you cruise the Lake Clarke section of the river, guides share stories of the region’s natural and human history while you take in some stunning views.
In nearby Columbia, the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center sits right on the water’s edge, at the foot of the impressive Veterans Memorial Bridge. This visitor center is a hub for exploring the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, a 14-mile path that follows the river north from town. You can also launch a kayak or canoe from Columbia River Park, or stop in the center for maps, exhibits, and educational programs focused on the Susquehanna’s role in defining the region.
History lovers will want to make time for the developing Susquehanna Discovery Center & Heritage Park, home to the Mifflin House & Farm — a documented station on the Underground Railroad. Though still under development, limited guided tours of the site are already available and offer a powerful look at the brave individuals who risked everything for freedom and the people who helped guide them along their journey to safety.
If your visit lines up with Riverfest 2025 (June 27–29), you’re in for a unique experience. This three-day event celebrates the three river towns of Marietta, Columbia, and Wrightsville while also commemorating the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War. The weekend schedule includes reenactments, guided tours, live music, and the Bridge Burner Challenge, a race that combines running and kayaking. It all ends with a dramatic fire show, lighting up the old bridge piers while storytellers recount the events of 1863.
With so many ways to explore and learn, the Susquehanna National Heritage Area is well worth a visit. Check out this “bucket list” of activities and begin your journey. With much of it just minutes from B.F. Hiestand House, it’s easy to make it part of your getaway at our historic inn.
